The five-prompt template

  1. The line: What sentence or image made you stop?
  2. The idea: What changed or sharpened your thinking?
  3. The feeling: What mood did the book leave behind?
  4. The connection: What did it remind you of?
  5. The return: What would make you open this book again?

Keep the note close to the moment

Write while the detail is still vivid. A sentence with a page number is often more valuable than a polished review written weeks later.

Do not summarise everything

Your future self does not need the entire plot. Preserve the detail that will reopen the experience: a question, contradiction, character choice or surprising phrase.

A finished-book note

When you finish, add one final line: “Months from now, I want to remember…” That sentence becomes the book’s doorway back into memory.
