Simple Evening Habits to Switch Off Before Sleep

Your evening routine is doing more work than you think. Here's what helps and what doesn't.

Why willpower doesn't work for sleep

Most people try to fall asleep by trying. They lie there and try harder — trying to relax, trying not to think, trying to switch off. That effort is itself alertness. Sleep doesn't come from trying. It comes from giving your body the right signals that it can stand down.

The wind-down is the work

Sleep isn't an on-off switch. It's a process that starts一到两个小时 before you actually fall asleep. Your body needs time to produce melatonin, lower its core temperature slightly, and shift out of active thinking mode. If you're doing demanding work until 11pm and then expecting to sleep at midnight, you're not accounting for the transition time.

What actually helps

What doesn't help

Alcohol helps you fall asleep but ruins the second half of the night. Caffeine after 2pm affects sleep more than most people realise. Exercise too close to bed can leave you too energised. These aren't bad things — but timing matters.

The one habit worth starting

Open your sound app before you do anything else in the evening. Not to fall asleep — just to have calm audio playing in the background while you do whatever comes naturally. The consistency of that sound every evening builds a slow, quiet association in your nervous system. Eventually, that sound becomes a signal that the day is ending.
